Everybody loves hardware, and these days hardware has more meanings to it than the term has ever had before. In this day and age, you can be carrying a whole lot of computer hardware on you, without encumbering yourself very much by it. And with all of this hardware, you can accomplish a lot of interesting things which our parents never would have imagined would be possible when they were our age. The way the world is nowadays, technology is moving so quickly that a new innovation seems to fall out of the sky almost as quickly as you can go grab a bite to eat or play a few rounds of golf. But in this world, where technology is so nearly worshipped by most people, it does beg the question of why we are all so obsessed with our hardware. What is it about these gadgets and gizmos that makes us drool over them so?
For starters, gizmos look good. Yes, the look of a piece of technology has actually been shown in psychological studies to be a very important factor. People who have been tested have even been recorded as saying that because a piece of technology looks slicker than some other tech gadget, it most likely works better. Obviously, this has got absolutely no basis in the world of logic and reason, and this kind of thinking obviously harkens back to a period in our evolutionary past in which better looking things were almost always better things. But it still makes a significant amount of difference in why we perceive hardware as great.
As far as why the technology that we carry with us everywhere we go really is great, that answer is a simple one. The technology that we love so much is one of the things which allows the world we live in to function as well as it does. Without the ability to communicate across great distances in an instant, coordinating anything in this world would be a massive migraine for everybody involved with it. Technology and hardware are about more than just looks.
